Lasik is a type of eye surgery that uses advanced laser technology to safely, effectively, and quickly correct blurred vision. It is a popular solution for men and women living in New Jersey who suffer from nearsightedness, far sightedness or astigmatism. Besides being painless, Lasik eye surgery requires only a few minutes to complete, and patients see the results of their corrected vision within 24 hours of the procedure.

Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an FDA cleared procedure that uses advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea. Your cornea is clear, dome shaped, and located at the front of your eye. It acts like a lens, bending or refracting the light that passes through it to focus on the retina. The retina is located at the back of the eye. It consists of light sensitive cells, known as rods and cones that translate light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain.
Most vision problems result from refractive errors, caused by imperfections in the cornea that prevent the proper focusing of light onto the retina. With nearsightedness, or myopia, the cornea is too curved to properly focus light on the retina. With farsightedness, or hyperopia, the cornea is too flat to properly focus light on to the retina.
During your Lasik procedure, your eye surgeon from Dello Russo Laser Vision will create a thin flap in your cornea using a femtosecond laser. Underneath the flap lies the stroma. This is the part of the cornea that is reshaped using a cold laser or excimer laser. If you are nearsighted, your eye surgeon will remove tissue from the center of the cornea to make the cornea flatter. If you are far sighted, your eye surgeon will remove tissue from the outer edges of the cornea to make the cornea steeper. By reshaping the cornea, light can now be properly focused on the retina, providing clear, sharp vision. After your eye surgeon reshapes the cornea, the flap is restored and the cornea is covered with a temporary contact lens that acts like a bandage. No stitches are required.
Prior to your eye surgery, your surgeon will give you a mild sedative to help relax your eyes and numbing eye drops to ensure a painless procedure. During the surgery, a lid speculum and mild suction keeps your eye from moving. This may sound unnerving, but the numbing drops typically alleviate any discomfort. For most patients, the entire Lasik procedure is completed in under 10 minutes.
Photo Refractive Keratectomy, commonly known as PRK was the precursor of LASIK. Both PRK and LASIK work using the same principle of reshaping the cornea to correct refraction errors. Both types of laser vision correction are safe, effective, and yield similar results. The major difference between PRK and LASIK is the technology used to access the underlying tissue of the cornea. LASIK is a more advanced method that uses a laser to create a flap in surface layer of the cornea. PRK uses a laser to scrape off the top layer of cells to access the underlying tissue. The cells that are cleared away during PRK naturally replace themselves over the span of several days.
Because LASIK uses the most advanced techniques for laser vision correction, it has many advantages over PRK. Besides decreasing pain and discomfort during and after the procedure, LASIK also decreases recovery time. However, PRK may be an ideal solution for certain patients who:
Lasik is the ideal way to correct blurry vision caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Unfortunately, not every person with blurry vision qualifies for LASIK eye surgery. During your thorough eye assessment from Dello Russo Laser Vision, your eye doctor will determine if LASIK is right for you.
- You have mild to moderate farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism
- Your corneas are thick enough to perform a flap
- Your corneas are symmetrically shaped
- Your pupils are 8mm or below in diameter
- You have no history of eye disease or chronic dry eye
For NJ patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK, other methods of laser eye surgery, such as PRK may still be a suitable option. During your complimentary eye assessment with the premier LASIK NJ provider, Dello Russo Laser Vision, your eye doctor will discuss which treatment is best for you.
